Use Cases For Bitmapsīitmaps are great for photo-realistic images or photos. They are really good at stripping out redundant information. In general it can be said that the binaries we will use are smarter than your favorite image editor when it comes to compression.

Filtering itself doesn’t reduce the size of the data (aka compress it), but it aims to make your pack of zeros and ones more compressible. Then they are transmitted further as a byte sequence. Different systems and algorithms try to be smart about what to get rid of when saving a file and targeting a certain file size/compression level/overall quality. Lossy images don’t keep every “bit” of an image.
